Val started with The Neighbourhood Hub in 2016 and currently works as a Safer Pathways for CALD Women program coordinator (ANROWS CALD Project in Action Research) and a community development officer. She was born in Latvia and completed her Bachelor of Education in Russia before spending some time in China and moving to Australia in 2013. She has a strong interest in domestic and family violence, mental health and community development and is currently completing her Masters of Social Work and Mental Health Practice with Griffith University. Being a migrant herself, Val is passionate about working with migrant women and supporting them to be safe and achieve their fullest potential. Throughout her time at The Neighbourhood Hub she has worked in various roles, mainly working with CALD communities. Val notes that working in a regional setting has its own benefits and challenges, and she would like to continue working towards creating a safe, resilient and empowered community of Mackay.
